Update: Congress Votes to Give FDA Authority Over Tobacco

Legislation that gives the federal government broad regulatory powers over tobacco products is on the way to President Obama’s desk, after Congress passed a bill today giving the FDA oversight of everything from the amount of nicotine in cigarettes to packaging and marketing.

The House voted 307-97 today to endorse the version passed 79-17 by the Senate yesterday. President Obama has said he will sign the measure into law.

The president hailed the bill’s passage, saying it “truly defines changes in Washington.” Obama said the legislation overcame years of opposition and that the “harmful, addictive and often deadly” effects of tobacco have been known for decades.
