Family Health Center, Inc. (FHC)—a Michigan Health Center serving Kalamazoo County—welcomed State Senator Tonya Schuitmaker to its north Kalamazoo location on February 17, 2012. FHC leaders including Denise Crawford, president and CEO, showcased the Health Center’s $9.3 million expansion project, which was made possible thanks to a federal grant provided through the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act of 2010.
Family Health Center is one of Michigan’s 32 Health Center organizations that, together, provide quality, affordable, community-based health care for nearly 600,000 Michigan residents at over 190 locations across the state. Currently FHC manages seven sites—six in Kalamazoo and one in Portage. The Health Center offers comprehensive health care services to more than 22,000 patients. The expansion of its north Kalamazoo site will triple the number of examination rooms at that location, increasing capacity for an additional 20,000 patients in need of health care and improving the quality of care for existing patients thanks to the purchase of new state-of-the-art technology.
Sen. Schuitmaker toured the two-story expansion, which is still under construction but is expected to be completed in late summer of this year. The City of Kalamazoo played a critical role in making the expansion possible by facilitating the purchase of the land needed for the add-on and closing a portion of the street which was separating the existing facilities from the newly acquired lot.
While the new addition will expand FHC’s patient population, an estimated 40,000 Kalamazoo residents will continue to be in need of health care services.
