Michigan Primary Care Association is hosting its annual in-person training for Michigan Health Center Board Members in May, covering the topic “Building Better Boards.”
From May 17-18, 2013, experts will share information on a variety of topics including parliamentary procedures, finances 101 and finances 201, legal and ethical requirements of nonprofit boards, fund development and more.
The Michigan Health Center Board Member Training will also prepare board members to provide the best governance possible in the face of new opportunities and challenges of providing health care in an increasingly competitive marketplace as the result of the Affordable Care Act, Health Insurance Marketplace, and potential Medicaid expansion.
Health Center Board Member Committee Chair Marcia Gibbard recommends the training for Health Center supporters.
“Why would they not want to [attend the training]? If they believe in their Health Center’s mission and support their community, then there is no better way to acquire the tools to become an effective board member than to learn from the ones who have been in the trenches to support their communities,” Gibbard said.
Past participants have given great reviews of MPCA’s Michigan Health Center Board Member Training, stating:
- “Length of presentations adequate, content relevant to novice and experienced board members, liked hearing presenters from the field articulate their own experiences.”
- “I enjoyed the informal nature of the presentations. Pick up great ideas for improvement (very practical presentations).”
- “MPCA always does an excellent job of organizing trainings and conferences. Thank you for your diligence. I want the staff to know it is appreciated and I don’t take it for granted.”
Due to changes in federal regulations, MPCA has to charge a small fee to attend the training, which will be held in Midland, Michigan at The H Hotel. The cost to attend the training is $150 for board members and Health Center staff, and $50 for consumer board members. Health Resources & Services Administration (HRSA) has generously provided funds to sponsor Consumer Board Members to participate at a discount.
